Emily Mitchell, with her parents David and Tammy Mitchell at the Eastern Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition.  Emily is the Calais High School Poetry Out Loud winner, and recently represented CHS at the Regional Competition held at Hampden Academy.  The competition, presented in partnership with the Maine Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. Over the past 11 years, Poetry Out Loud has reached more than 3 million students and 45,000 teachers from 10,000 schools nationwide. Maine has the 8th highest state school participation in the country, including all states and Puerto Rico. Emily interpreted three poems for the competition: "Broken Promises," by David Kirby; "The Obligation to Be Happy," by Linda Pastan; and "When You Are Old," by William Butler Yates.
