Shead Principal Names Honor Parts

Eastport Schools Principal Paul L. Theriault has named the honor parts for Shead High School’s 2017 Commencement. 

Valedictorian is Kaylie Robertson, daughter of Shannon and David Morang of Edmunds. A member of the National Honor Society, Robertson has been president of the Shead Outing Club and treasurer of the Shead High School Student Senate. She has also participated in the Civil Rights Club and the Shead Dance Team and played tennis, as well as volunteering at her church. She plans to attend the University of Maine at Orono and major in Psychology as preparation for a career as a neuropsychologist.

Salutatorian is Matthew Harris, son of Janna and Captain Butch Harris of Perry. A fivesport athlete, he has been a member of the basketball, soccer, baseball, golf, and tennis teams, earning Downeast Athletic Conference (DAC) All-star accolades in all but soccer. He is president of the National Honor Society and volunteers as an umpire for the area Cal Ripkin League. Holder of a Maine lobster license, Harris also works in his family business at Eastport Windjammers. He plans to major in Marine Transportation Operations at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine.

First Honor Part is awarded to Kneviah Newcomb, daughter of Melissa and Tony Newcomb of Eastport. She has been active in National Honor Society and the Shead Chess Club, and hosts a weekly radio show on WSHD-FM called “Subject Syrup.” Newcomb attended an engineering exploration camp at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, raising all the funding herself through performing community cleanups. Newcomb will attend Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York to study Electrical Engineering.

Second Honor Part goes to Mackenzie Hansen, daughter of Lynn and Paul Hansen of Eastport. She has held office in several organizations, including secretary of the National Honor Society, vice-president of the Student Senate, and secretary of the Outing Club. In addition, she has played tennis, as well as participating in the Civil Rights Team and Dance Team. She managed both boys’ and girls’ soccer, and was active in the Mixed Nuts drama troupe, serving as stage manager and sound technician. Her community service includes helping to organize the Jay Suddy 5K Run. Hansen will study Nursing at the Boston campus of the University of Massachusetts.

Third Honor Part is awarded to Katelyn Mitchell, daughter of Traci Clarion and Jimmy Mitchell of Perry. She is a four-year athlete in basketball, soccer, and softball, and is a DAC Allstar in basketball and softball. In addition, she has served as junior-class and senior-class president and is vice-president of the National Honor Society. She plans to study business administration at the University of Maine at Orono.

Fourth honor part goes to Holly Preston, daughter of Sheila Small of Perry and Dean and Avery Preston. A standout athlete during her four years at Shead, she has played basketball, soccer, softball, and tennis, winning multiple DAC All-star awards in a variety of sports. She received All-State Honorable Mention in basketball in 2017 and was also a MacDonald’s All-Star. An alternate on the All-Tourney Team in basketball, she is the winner of the Most Valuable Player Owen Osbourne Award in Class D, leading her team to two consecutive Northern Maine Championships and two State Runner-up titles. She will attend the University of Maine at Orono in preparation for a career as an athletic trainer.
