This year will see a lot of new faces in the Calais school system, but it will also have some familiar faces in new roles. Kati Grass, who has been the secretary in the front office at Calais Middle High School for the last two years, will be leaving the front office for the business classroom down the hall.

The Business Management program, which is part of St. Croix Regional Technical Center, teaches students everything from basic word processing skills to accounting and desktop publishing. Mrs. Grass will be stepping into the position vacated by long-time teacher Sandie Sawyer with her retirement at the end of the last school year.

Mrs. Grass is a Calais High School Alum, as well as a graduate from Eastern Maine Community College and Southern New Hampshire University where she obtained an Associates and Bachelors degrees in business respectively.

The business class is much more than looking at numbers and figures on spreadsheets and computer screens. Mrs. Grass will teach everything from the foundations of word processing and typing to accounting and desktop publishing. “I really hope that [students] get a love of business and numbers. I also hope that [students] get the aspect of growth. They are going to start with simple things and be willing to grow. Learning to grow will be key to helping them after high school. I hope they get that too.”

When she was in high school, Mrs. Grass had several amazing teachers, but one in particular stuck out in her mind: Mr. Smith. “Mr. Smith really has a way of teaching that makes students love to learn. He’s very animated with his teaching,” Mrs. Grass said. It was teachers like Mr. Smith that made Mrs. Grass want to go into teaching.

Mrs. Grass also works as the volunteer cheerleading coach for Calais High School and is the Junior Varsity Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach in high school volleyball. When she isn’t at the school, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son. They enjoy being outside doing activities like hiking and swimming.
