Win Four of Five Contests Last Week


Calais and Woodland high schools had an exciting opener to the 2018 season in Baileyville this past Monday. The Dragons drew first blood in the bottom of one when Drew Hayward took a base on balls for the circuit earning the first score with two steals and a fielder’s choice. With two out Andrew McLellan singled and Pellerin doubled resulting in a 1-1 contest. The game continued to see-saw until six walks during the 6 & 7 frames allowed the Blue Devils the edge needed in securing an 7-6 win in the bottom of the seventh when Pellerin scored the winning run. Andrew McLellan paced the Devils win with 2 singles, Finn had a triple, Collins double, and Pellerin a double. On the Dragon ledger Alex Morrison had two singles and Luke McDonald a triple.

East Grand visited WHS on Tuesday and Luke McDonald controlled the action from the hill as he faced 12 batters and earned an incredible 11-K, earning a perfect game for 4mframes. On the offensive side Justin Monk paced the Dragons 10 hit attack with 2-singles and a double. Drew Hayward added a single-triple and Luke McDonald had a double.

The Shead Tigers were hosted in Baileyville on Friday and the young team managed a lone triple from J. Cook along with several walks and earned 1 run, while the Dragons had a number of repeat hitters led by Justin Monk with 3 singles; Hayward, Gardner (2b), Morrison (3b), and McDonald each added two base hits.

At home against CAHS on Saturday Alex Morrison cranked a home run and two singles to key a 13 hit attack that carried the Dragons to victory in the first game of a doubleheader. In that game the Dragon’s right fielder, Ian Howland, had a serious leg injury and was transported to Ellsworth where he was successfully operated on – everyone is thinking of you Ian and wishing you a quick recovery and looking forward to have you back in school! 

Justin Monk collected three hits for Woodland while Gavin Gardner, Matthew Miller and Ethan Cilley contributed two hits each. Lane Grass stroked a double and a triple and knocked in three runs for Central Aroostook of Mars Hill. Luke McDonald went the distance on the hill allowing just 6 hits with 9K and just 2 walks.

At Woodland, Drew Hayward pitched a four-hit, five-inning shutout with 5K and 2BB. The Dragons connected for 11 hits to win the second game of a doubleheader. Matthew Miller and Luke McDonald had three hits each, while Gavin Gardner and Alex Morrison posted two hits each. The win ended a five game week giving the Dragons a 4-1 record to start the season.
