Big Stop Aims to Slow Plastic Pollution with Straw Cutbacks

Patrons at Irving’s Big Stop in Baileyville have been met with placards announcing the eatery’s newest change: In an attempt to curtail the rampant plastic pollution of the oceans, Big Stop will no longer be providing straws by default to diners. Those that wish to have straws can still request them. The placard reads: “Beginning this summer, straws will be available by request at our Big Stop Restaurants. Worldwide, straws are often not recycled, and, given their small size, present a serious threat to the survival of marine mammals in our ocean.” (Photo by Lura Jackson)
